Why this part gets replaced
A screen gets replaced for one of four reasons: the glass is cracked, the backlight has died so the image is only visible under a torch, the panel shows lines, bleeding or dead pixels, or the hinge has torn the display cable. Cracked glass and a dead backlight are the common ones. If the image is fine on an external monitor, the fault is almost always the panel or its cable rather than the graphics chip.
Making sure it is the right one
The model number is on a sticker on the BACK of the panel, not on the laptop's own base. You have to open the lid bezel to read it. It usually looks like B156XTN04 or NT156WHM-N42. Match that string, plus the resolution and the connector pin count. Two panels can fit the same laptop physically and still be incompatible.
What fitting it involves
A bare panel swap on an older laptop with a removable bezel is a 45 minute job. A modern glued display assembly is not: it needs heat, patience and usually a full assembly rather than a bare panel. If your machine is a MacBook or any thin-bezel laptop, buy the assembly, not the panel.
