Why this part gets replaced
Batteries are consumable. They fail gradually, not suddenly: runtime drops, the machine dies at 30% or only runs on mains, or the pack swells and starts to lift the trackpad or the case. A swollen battery is the one to act on immediately, because it will eventually crack the chassis or the screen.
Making sure it is the right one
The part number is printed on the face of the battery itself, so you have to open the machine to read it. Match the number, the voltage and the connector. A pack with the right physical size but the wrong voltage will not charge and can damage the board.
What fitting it involves
Most laptops with a service hatch are a 20 minute job. Machines with the battery glued into the top case, which includes most modern MacBooks, need solvent and a lot of care. Never puncture or bend a lithium pack.
