Doña Ana is the oldest surviving settlement in the Mesilla Valley - Las Cruces was settled later, and by people from here. It takes its name from Doña Ana Robledo, who died in 1680 during the Pueblo Revolt, and the village historic district is on the National Register. The British traveller George Frederick Ruxton found it in 1846 as "a very recent settlement of ten or fifteen families" living under constant threat of Apache raids. Nearly two centuries later it still has no computer shop.
