Fabens takes its name from a Southern Pacific Railroad officer and was laid out in 1911; cotton took over after the Franklin Canal opened in 1916. Hall of Fame jockey Bill Shoemaker was born here in 1931, and Fabens Airport has been the lower valley's general-aviation field since April 1944.
