Tornillo was platted in 1909 and named for the screwbean mesquite hauled out of here for El Paso firewood. By 1990 it had the largest cotton gin in Texas, processing about 90% of the valley's crop. It is also, improbably, home to Sonic Ranch — the largest residential recording studio complex in the world, built among the pecan orchards — which means people have been travelling to Tornillo for specialist work for decades.
